artist statement

I don’t always know what the finished piece will look like, before I begin.  I have a pretty good idea about where I want to go, but the best part of creating something is when you find it taking you in a direction you didn’t think of - when the piece takes on a life of its own, and shows you something you’ve never seen.

Nature is a big influence.  I live near the ocean, and try to create the freedom and fluidity of movement that’s everywhere around us.  My sculptures are all based on natural forms, but each is abstract, and based on the idea that nature is a reassuring constant in a world that can be very technically complex.

The theme of Anima * Animus * Animal was a natural fit for this piece.  Animals play such an important role in our culture, our ecosystems, and our lives, not to mention our enjoyment of them.  With Tiger, I tried to illustrate the idea of our interdependence and coexistence with animals, and the happiness they bring.

artist bio

Chris Paxson was born in Atlantic City, graduated with a degree in Visual Communications from Stockton University, and still lives near the Jersey Shore.  He’s made his living as a commercial artist, founding Coastline Creations in 1999, building commercial art pieces for clients such as Carnival Cruise Lines, Crayola Crayons, VH-1, and Fuse.

After a busy few years building trade show displays, props, and commercial sculptures, he decided to begin sculpting pieces on his own.  He sold his first piece in 2008 through the East End Gallery in Margate, NJ, and has shown work at Arch Enemy Gallery in Philadelphia, Ivystone Studio in Downingtown PA, and JAM Gallery in Malvern, PA.

When an artist makes his living bringing other people’s visions to life, it’s easy to forget the joy that comes in taking a risk, in creating something purely for yourself.  These sculptures are a return to why Chris got into art in the first place.

art scene today Q & A

Q: Where do you see yourself in the art scene today?
A:  I will always feel new to it, I think. Seeing one of your pieces in a gallery is a feeling that’s humbling and
inspiring, and I hope I never lose that.

Q: What is in your inspiration?
A:  The natural world is a big inspiration for me.  I’ve always been a fan of free-flowing shapes and movement.

Q: What are your challenges?
A:  Putting my stuff out there for the world to see always feels like a risk.  A big challenge is staying true to what inspires me, instead of trying to guess what people want to see.

Q: How did you/do you choose your medium?
A:  I began sculpting years ago as a commercial artist.  I really enjoyed it, and loved the way a piece would begin to take shape.  I’ve always felt more connected to dimensional artwork.

Q: Which artist has influenced you the most?
A:  It’s hard to pinpoint a particular artist that influences me.  I try to stay open to everything,  If you identify too closely with or allow someone else’s work to influence you too much, you run the risk of your work becoming a copy of something that’s already been done.
