Victoria Bennett is a Melbourne based curator, producer and business owner. Since graduating from RMIT University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Art she has participated in the Melbourne arts community both as a practitioner and arts-worker. Victoria has been a board member of Kings ARI and is currently producing an arts/writing publication for SEVENTH gallery. She has exhibited throughout Australia and received grants from the City of Melbourne, Australia Council for the Arts and Arts Victoria.

In 2009 she curated her first solo exhibition, Accidental Feminists, a photographic installation comprising of sound and artist books. The exhibition depicted women-only environments and documents young Australian women in the process of collective identity while reflecting the complex feminism(s) of our time. The work questions negative stereotypes and the representations of young women within the current cultural debate. In particular, the exhibition questions the notion that we are living in a ‘post-feminist’ stage and that young women are not actively involved with feminist ideas.

In 2010 she is co-curated an exhibition for the Next Wave Festival, The View From Here: 19 Perspectives on Feminism, which pairs eight writers with eight artists to explore new feminist ideas and their influence on emerging arts practices. The participating artists and writers worked together in dialogue and their different perspectives on feminism are manifested in the publication and exhibition. The View From Here offers a range of visual and written works exploring themes of identity, sexuality, gender politics, representation, ‘post’ feminism and femininity. Together, the works suggest a new perspective on feminism—a view that is non-prescriptive, that references the past whilst carving out a future. The result is a cacophony of voices that represents the myriad feminisms being negotiated in our time.

Currently she and Clare Rae own and manage Rae Bennett Gallery and Fine Art Printing.
